ANC wants its MP to face the law to clear her name

The Office of the African National Congress (ANC) Chief Whip, Jackson Mthembu, on Thursday said it had noted with concern charges of stock theft against ANC Member of Parliament (MP), Comrade Mmapula Mafolo.
The ANC Chief Whip said he has had an opportunity to speak to Comrade Mafolo to hear her version of the story on the matter. “We have full confidence in our justice system and believe that the court process currently underway will afford her an opportunity to clear her name,” said the ANC Chief Whip in a statement.
Comrade Mafolo was arrested on Friday the 12th in Schweizer-Reneke, together with a male companion for alleged theft of cattle.
She was released on a warning on 14 January and
appeared in court the following day (on the 15th), where the matter was postponed to 19 February.
This week Cde Mafolo met a delegation from ANC Bokone Bophirima to also share her side of the story.

ANC Bokone Bophirima Deputy Provincial Secretary, Sussana Dantjie and ANC Women’s League Provincial Secretary, Bridgette Tlhomelang, met Cde Mafolo on behalf of the party.

“Cde Mmapula was indeed arrested in Schweizer-Reneke together with Thabo Phutiyagae. According to her version of the story, Thabo Phutiyagae is her
boyfriend of four years. He is unemployed, but in the business of buying and selling cows,” said Dantjie in a statement after the meeting.

“On the day that they were arrested, Cde Mmapula had given Thabo a lift to an auction to sell two cows he said he bought from a colleaque, only to find that the cows are allegedly stolen. She was taken to Vryburg police station on 12 January and was released on free bail on 14 January. She appeared in court on the 15th and the matter was postponed to 19 February,” she said.

The ANC said justice must be given space to prevail without any hindrance.

“As much as we respect that the accused remains innocent until proven otherwise, we condemn the involvement of our members in any sorts of crime and we get satisfied as a party if they go through the justice system processes and their names are cleared. We believe as the ANC that the law must take its course, even though Cde Mmapula claims that she is innocent as she was only giving her partner a lift,” Dantjie said.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said the calves were allegedly stolen in Schweizer-Reneke on Thursday night and the arrest was made the following day by the Vryburg Stock Theft Unit.
The NPA’s Phindi Louw described the matter this way. “At the time of the arrest, they had already booked a kraal for two calves at the auction and were in the process of registering for sale”.
Cde Mafolo has been an ANC Regional Executive Committee (REC) member of the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati region since 2008. She’s led the Ipelegeng Youth Organisation as Treasurer, was Deputy Secretary of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) in Ipelegeng, Deputy Branch Chairperson of the ANC in Ipelegeng, ANC Women’s League Chairperson of Mamusa Branch and ANC Bokone Bophirima Regional List Committee member.
